PolyOne Highlights New Automotive Solutions at VDI Engineering Plastics Conference

April 3, 2014

MANNHEIM, Germany – PolyOne Corporation (NYSE: POL), a premier global provider of specialized polymer materials, services and solutions, is exhibiting its specialty portfolio of technologies to automotive designers and engineers this week at the 2014 VDI Plastics in Automotive Engineering conference. New metal replacement solutions and thermoplastic elastomers for sealing applications help manufacturers effectively and economically increase fuel efficiency, reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and improve manufacturing efficiencies.

“With our formulation expertise, we can help customers to optimize their manufacturing processes, increase consumer appeal, and meet increasingly strict regulations regarding carbon dioxide emissions and fuel efficiency,” said Kendall Justiniano, PolyOne director of global automotive marketing. “As in past years at this event, we look forward to in-depth discussions with our customers to discover how we can help meet their challenges.”

To meet new European Union targets for CO2 emissions on new vehicles, many in the automotive industry are looking for ways to remove additional weight. An automotive aftermarket LED light on display at the PolyOne VDI stand provides a good example. By replacing aluminum with Therma-Tech™ thermally conductive polymer in the heat sink, manufacturers can significantly reduce total part weight and optimize production and logistics.

PolyOne is also exhibiting several specialty materials that help automotive designers to optimize sustainability, improve design freedom and boost manufacturing efficiency in the following areas:

  • Vibration and noise control: By replacing traditional rubber and other thermosets, GLS™ TPE formulations tackle noise and vibration issues on exterior mirrors and other parts, while providing functional sealing, greater design freedom, and part consolidation through overmolding.
  • Paint substitution: Painting is costly, produces VOCs, and complicates production. OnColor™ color and additive concentrates help manufacturers transition away from paint to in-mold color (IMC) solutions that maintain aesthetic qualities while eliminating production steps.
  • Efficient slush molding: Recently introduced low-temperature Geon™ VBX vinyl powder formulations for automotive interior surfaces and instrument panels meet OEM low temperature requirements and can provide production efficiency improvements of 15% or more.

The VDI Plastics in Automotive Engineering conference is being held this week in Mannheim, Germany. PolyOne welcomes visitors to its stand, 83A.
